Syllable, Phoneme, and Tone: Psycholinguistic Units in Early Chinese and English Word Recognition

چکیده
Tasks of word reading in Chinese and English; nonverbal IQ; speeded naming; and units of syllable onset (a phoneme measure), syllable, and tone detection awareness were administered to 211 Hong Kong Chinese children ages 4 and 5. In separate regression equations, syllable awareness was equally associated with Chinese and English word recognition. In contrast, syllable onset awareness was uniquely associated with English reading only, whereas tone detection was uniquely associated with Chinese reading only. Results underscore both the universality of first-language phonological transfer to second-language reading and the importance of different psycholinguistic units (Ziegler & Goswami, 2005) for understanding reading acquisition: Tone units are integral to Chinese character recognition, whereas SCIENTIFIC STUDIES OF READING, 12(2), 171–194 Copyright © 2008 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC ISSN: 1088-8438 print / 1532-799X online DOI: 10.1080/10888430801917290

Phonological Units in Spoken Word Production: Insights from Cantonese
Evidence from previous psycholinguistic research suggests that phonological units such as phonemes have a privileged role during phonological planning in Dutch and English (aka the segment-retrieval hypothesis). However, the syllable-retrieval hypothesis previously proposed for Mandarin assumes that only the entire syllable unit (without the tone) can be prepared in advance in speech planning. ...

Introduction: This research was planned to determine some verbal-auditory skills (verbal-auditory short memory and phonological awareness) that have the closest relationship with speech and language development in 5-year-old children. Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 400 children of pre-school classes affiliated to Education and Welfare organizations in Semnan city were select...
متن کاملOn the syllable structures of Chinese relating to speech recognition
It is well known that Chinese is a tone language with multi-tone system, but the distinctive syllable structures relating to speech recognition have not brought to phoneticians' attention yet. The syllable structures, the phonotactic rules were discussed and the joint probability of the initials and the finals were given in this paper. A comparative study of the relative information transmitted...
متن کاملAllophone-based acoustic modeling for Persian phoneme recognition
Phoneme recognition is one of the fundamental phases of automatic speech recognition. Coarticulation which refers to the integration of sounds, is one of the important obstacles in phoneme recognition. In other words, each phone is influenced and changed by the characteristics of its neighbor phones, and coarticulation is responsible for most of these changes. The idea of modeling the effects o...

Two experiments examined if visual word access varies cross-linguistically by studying Spanish/English adult bilinguals, priming two syllable CVCV words both within (Experiment 1) and across (Experiment 2) syllable boundaries in the two languages. Spanish readers accessed more first syllables based on within syllable primes compared to English readers. In contrast, syllable-based primes helped ...
